Glenn Quince Bannerman has been honored by the steering committee of the 54th Annual Recreation Workshop as the first recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was created to honor those who have made significant contributions to the Annual Recreation Workshop (ARW), a non-profit organization that trains leaders from across the country and from many other nations in recreation ministry.  The Workshop is offered each May and is co-sponsored and hosted by the Montreat Conference Center.

Prior to the presentation, Bannerman’s former students led the workshop in recreation activities they learned under his tutelage. The award was presented by Lynn Turnage, a former student of Bannerman at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (PSCE), current director of educational ministries at Mt. Pleasant Church in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and ARW Steering Committee chair.

“There are generations of people of ALL ages who have learned so much from Glenn Bannerman: the joy and VALUE of playing together, the importance of ‘flow’ of activities, that as leaders we ‘do it and then talk about it,’ and that it can all be done with little or no emphasis on competition,” Turnage said. After graciously accepting the award, Bannerman immediately expressed gratitude to his wife, Evelyn: “They say behind every successful man is a good woman, but in my case that is not true. My wife Evelyn has stood right beside me throughout my years with ARW.”

Immediately after the close of the workshop, Glenn and Evelyn departed to continue the Recreational Ministry May Term class at Union Theological Seminary-Presbyterian School of Christian Education (Union-PSCE) in Richmond, Va.

Bannerman is a graduate of Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University), and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, class of 1957. He taught at PSCE until his retirement in 1989 and is now Professor Emeritus of Recreation and Outdoor Ministry. In addition to his contributions to ARW and Union-PSCE, he continues to lead recreation workshops across the country.  The Bannermans have four children and ten grandchildren and live in Montreat, N.C.
