Little debate, but strong passions, around immigration issues

July 7, 2012 by Leslie Scanlon, Outlook national reporter

PITTSBURGH, July 6, 2012 – Presenting late at night July 6, the General Assembly Committee on Immigration Issues presented almost all its business through a consent agenda – which meant very little discussion. Two items were pulled form that agenda and amendments proposed, but those failed. Even brief remarks, however, indicated the passion commissioners feel on these issues and regarding the significance of immigrant congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

“Every chance we have to take a stand is very important,” said Annie Rawlings, a ruling elder from New York City, speaking of the importance of the PC(USA) taking a stand regarding comprehensive immigration reform. “This is a human issue much more than it is a political issue.”

Here’s a Presbyterian News Service report on the immigration-related issues the committee considered.
