Presbyterians make no changes in marriage policy, call for two-year study.

PITTSBURGH, July 6, 2012 – Commissioners to the 220th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have voted to make no changes to their marriage policy.  In its Friday evening session the assembly voted to engage in a two-year churchwide study on the theology of marriage instead of issuing an authoritative interpretation (AI) that would have allowed ministers to perform same-gender marriages in states that allow them.  The choice for the study and against the AI was passed by a series of votes on particular details, by margins ranging from 4 percent to a final vote of 480-157, that is, 76 percent to 24.

Earlier in the day the commissioners turned back a proposal to change the definition of marriage from “between a man and a woman” to “between two people.”

A DETAILED REPORT WILL FOLLOW.
