Engage Discipleship

How is your congregation raising up new disciples? Are you looking for new approaches to ignite and engage your discipleship practices?

The Evangelism Office is becoming more convinced that if churches are making disciples, we will be starting new churches, reaching new people and doing justice in our communities.

If churches are going to be making disciples, we have to be starting new churches, reaching new people, and doing justice in our communities, says Ray Jones and the Office of Evangelism where he serves.  Disciple making is essential to the ministry of the church.  We will examine what it means to be intentional about our relationships, as we walk alongside other disciples in order to equip, encourage, and challenge one another in love to follow Jesus into our lives, life together, and community.

By participating in this webinar you will:

  • Strengthen your ability to tell your own stories of transformation and the witness of Scripture
  • Identify your spheres of influence, where you can tell those stories and equip the others to do so, too
  • Develop a plan to deepen your relationships with God and with others both within and outside the church

The Welcoming Congregation

presented by Henry Brinton

Will your church be ready for guests this summer and fall?

Summer is the perfect time to put a hospitality plan in place.

Henry Brinton’s book “The Welcoming Congregation: Roots and Fruits of Christian Hospitality” blends the “how to” and the “why to” of Christian hospitality, presents the best practices of welcoming congregations across the theological spectrum, and offers concrete action plans for congregations.

Churches that want to embrace all people begin with the creation of welcoming sites, worship, meals, and small groups then enjoy the fruits of reconciliation, outreach, and new perceptions of God’s inclusive love. Discover the biblical basis for Christian hospitality and how it is practiced in welcoming congregations today.

Participants will gain:

  • An understanding of why welcoming is so difficult today

  • An overview of best practices of hospitable congregations in the US and abroad

  • Knowledge of the roots of Christian hospitality: welcoming sites, worship, meals, and small groups

  • Appreciation for the fruits of hospitality: reconciliation, outreach, and new perceptions of God’s inclusive love

  • Action plans for your congregation, to help you do a better job of welcoming guests

Webinar: Sabbath-Keeping for Church Leaders and Other Busy People

To purchase a DVD of the webinar, click here. ($39.95 plus shipping)

Pastors and church leaders are in a bind. We feel the stress of ever-escalating activities and expectations in our 24-7 world. The need for rest, renewal and Sabbath is as strong as it’s ever been. The people we serve feel it too. Yet we count on them to teach the Sunday School, serve on session, sing in the choir and sort canned goods for the food bank. How can we preach, model and nurture Sabbath more faithfully amid our culture of perpetual motion?

As a result of this webinar, church leaders will:

  • understand the complex biblical and theological underpinnings of the practice of Sabbath,

  • receive tools for communicating its importance to congregations

  • gain strategies and approaches for introducing and supporting regular Sabbath-keeping in the congregations they serve

MaryAnn McKibben Dana explored this topic in depth in her recent book Sabbath in the Suburbs: A Family’s Experiment with Holy Time.

Read the Presbyterian Outlook Book review.

sabbath-in-suburbs.pngPublishers Weekly said:

Dana, a Presbyterian pastor, brings a fresh voice and energy to the familiar topic of time management as understood by people who would describe themselves as either religious or spiritual but not religious: Sabbath-keeping. She writes from a perspective that many can relate to, that of a suburban mother of three who works part-time. Bringing the gift of self-awareness and irony, Dana notes that a four-minute difference in school bus rides ought not to prompt a letter-writing campaign from anxious parents. She also brings theological awareness of the historical practice and meaning of Sabbath-keeping. Dana writes in a distinct voice about making a traditional religious practice meaningful to contemporary families.

MaryAnn McKibben Dana is pastor of Idylwood Presbyterian Church, a small and growing congregation in Falls Church, VA. She is also the author of numerous articles and essays, including three years as columnist for Presbyterians Today. She is a frequent speaker and workshop leader around issues of congregational transformation and faith development. Connect with her on her blug The Blue Room at theblueroomblog.org

HOW TO TALK ABOUT MONEY WITH THEOLOGICAL INTEGRITY”

Presbyterian Outlook Webinar Featuring Bill Enright

Jesus had much to say about money and the faithful use of possessions; in fact the Bible has more to say about this subject than love or prayer. Ironically, most pulpits are silent when it comes to money-talk except for the annual stewardship or “we-need-your-money” sermon. How different might the financial health of most American congregations be if clergy knew how to talk about money with theological integrity and pastoral sensitivity? You’ll learn about:

* Breaking the taboo of money-talk in your congregation.

* Understanding church giving from the donors’ point of view.

* Shaping a theology of faith, money and giving.

William G. Enright, Ph.D., is director of the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and former pastor of Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis. He has written several books, the latest being Channel Markers. Bill is a director of Lilly Endowment, Inc.

Featuring, TOM EHRICH is founder of the Church Wellness Project and author of the “Multichannel Church” column in the Outlook.

Today’s prospective audiences are not drawn into yesterday’s churches.  But churches can “edit” the narrative of their Christian journey in order to welcome new “actors” into the next chapters of that unfolding story.    This webinar will offer strategies to help church leaders – pastors, staff members, and other congregational leaders – shape and guide the story. What’s to Become of our Church?

Trajectories of Hope

Featuring Jack Haberer, Editor of the Presbyterian Outlook

Like a ship in a harbor being rocked by the waves, so the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

is getting rocked by the double waves of NFog and 10-A. Have the mooring lines

broken asunder? Will the church be dashed upon the rocks? Will the church

founder and sink? Many people are raising these questions, as witnessed by the

gathering of the Fellowship of Presbyterians this fall, who will gather again at a

covenanting convention early in the new year. Are there better alternatives to that

which is splitting us apart? Can we Presbyterians navigate effectively through these

troubled waters?

-Preaching through Lent

Ideas and insights for preparing sermons based on the lectionary texts

meda
Meda Stamper is pastor of Anstey United Reformed Church in England and visiting lecturer in New Testament at St. John’s College, Nottingham. She is a minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and has a Ph.D. in biblical studies (New Testament) from Princeton Theological Seminary.
She has developed one-woman performances of a number of biblical texts, including the Gospel of John and the Gospel of Mark, and has led scripture-based retreats at Abbey of Lérins on the Île Saint-Honorat off the coast of France.

The Journal for Preaching has tapped Meda’s exegetical and homiletic skills to offer insights for pastors preparing for this year’s Lectionary-based Lenten sermons. They have graciously agreed to allow her to share her observations and her passion through the Outlook’s Pre-Lenten Webinar.

-UNBINDING GENEROSITY

Attention Pastors, Stewardship committee members, ALL Christians!!

mendenhall

Jesus unbound Lazarus from the tomb — he called him from death to life. Our culture of plenty binds us. The attitude that ‘more is better’ governs our lives. Reclaim the Spirit’s power in our lives.

Take this opportunity to explore how we can unbind our generosity – unbind the generosity of our fellow church members, too! — and make a difference with the lives that we have been given. Our Webinar leader will be Laura Mendenhall, senior philanthropy advisor for the Texas Presbyterian Foundation; former president of Columbia Theological Seminary, and former pastor of Westminster Church, Austin, Texas.

-Yes or No on Amendment A

Mike Loudon-Mark Achtemeier

Former PUP Task Force colleagues Mike Loudon and Mark Achtemeier  have found many areas of agreement in their consideration of issues within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

However, on the issue of ordaining gays and lesbians, they take different positions. Read below the texts of their presentations from a recent Outlook Webinar on Amendment A – setting aside the “fidelity in marriage or chastity in singleness”standard for ordination. Webinar download, includes the verbal presentations by Achtemeier and Loudon and a 30-minute question and answer discussion.
