I.C.Y. in ‘65 – 40 years ago

40 years ago — February 1, 1965

In 1965 the United Nations was celebrating its 20th anniversary. The body had “recommended that 1965 be observed as International Cooperation Year.” The concept was first proposed by “the late Prime Minister Nehru of India, in a speech to the UN General Assembly three years ago, and it quickly won wide support. President Johnson has announced U.S. participation and has called upon citizens and organizations to support international cooperation.

The term international cooperation has two meanings — one general and one specific. It can mean cooperation among persons and groups across national boundaries. More narrowly and specifically, international cooperation means cooperation among nations. … When a nation engages in formal cooperation with another nation, or a group of nations, in a matter of common concern, they begin to experience community. This leads to more and wider cooperation and more and wider community — and in the process peace becomes more necessary, more imperative. It may be that peace on earth will come — as a byproduct of international cooperation.”
