Jim Collins has written a new book called How the Mighty Fall (c. 2009 by Jim Collins; distributed by HarperCollins). Collins looks at businesses and corporations that once were great and have fallen on hard times and identifies stages or steps in their decline. Much of this is transferable to churches.

Recently I attended the sixth grade Renaissance Fair at Springfield Middle School. It was quite the event with hundreds of eleven- and twelve-year-olds dressed in varying degrees of homemade costumes displaying varying degrees of mortification.

Two years ago when my wife Barbara faced open-heart surgery, the members of our congregation, the session, and deacons jumped into action to help us as much as they could. For ten days they brought us evening meals so I could take care of her and also continue to do my job. |
