The 222nd GA: August 1, 2016 digital issue

The 222nd General Assembly elected co-moderators and a new stated clerk, approved the addition of the Belhar Confession to the Book of Confessions and voted their faith into action on a number of business items.

NEW LEADERSHIP MAKES HISTORY
Denise Anderson and Jan Edmiston are the PC(USA)’s first co-moderator team and first female slate. J. Herbert Nelson is the first African-American stated clerk.

ADOPTING BELHAR
The assembly made history voting to add a new confession to the Book of Confessions.

MIDDLE EAST
The assembly adopted an action plan aimed at shielding Palestinian rights.

FOSSIL FUELS
Corporate engagement was chosen over comprehensive divestment.

ASSEMBLY ACTIONS
The assembly acted on social justice issues, retained the current synod struc- ture, approved new budgets, revisions to the Directory for Worship and more. Even so, they found time to pray and reach out to Portland’s homeless.
