Third Sunday of Advent Year B
We Can’t Sit on Fences
ASH GROVE 188.8.131.52.6.11 D (“Let All Things Now Living”)
We can’t sit on fences, O God, you have told us.
We can’t just assume that both sides are the same.
In Christ, you have saved us; in Christ, you still hold us;
You call us to live thankful lives in your name.
You scatter the proud and you bring down the mighty.
You lift up the lowly; the hungry have food.
The rich and the haughty are sent away empty;
We can’t sit on fences! May we seek the good.
We point past ourselves and we point to another;
We’re called to bear witness to Jesus your Son.
For just as John came here to baptize with water,
He pointed to Jesus, a much greater One.
Christ came bringing hope for the ones in oppression;
He bound up the broken, freed prisoners for you!
He brought in the justice and love of your kingdom;
We can’t sit on fences; there’s work here to do.
