    Testimony: Vocabulary of Faith

September 12, 2020 by The Presbyterian Outlook 2 Comments

We are excited to offer this new curriculum, which we hope frees people to live their Reformed faith by remembering, reclaiming and rearticulating what we believe about who God is and who we are so the patterns of our lives embody the liberating love and grace of Jesus Christ.   Designed to be used by small groups of adults either in person or virtually, each of the six sessions includes a video featuring multiple perspectives on the lesson topic, an outline for an hour to an hour-and-a-half class and appendices with teaching helps and Bible passages. Whether for Sunday school or a mid-week Bible study, this curriculum invites participants to engage with Scripture, Reformed theology and their own faith journey. We pray it will be a blessing to you and your congregation. Presbyteries: Call George Whipple at  800-446-6008; ext. 756 for pricing.  … [Read more...]

September 10, 2020 by The Presbyterian Outlook 1 Comment

Advent time: Devotions for the congregation Are you looking for theologically sound, inspiring and affordable Advent devotions for the congregation? The Presbyterian Outlook is once again offering accessible and inspiring daily devotions for Advent written by editor Jill Duffield. This year the focus is on the time of Advent for the church. Buy 4 weeks of Advent devotions: $20 About these devotions:   We hear often these days that we are living through unprecedented times. Our experience of time has been altered in recent months. Our routines and rhythms, milestones and rituals, are upended. As we enter the liturgical season of Advent, when we are to eagerly prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ and also anticipate his return, how will we mark this time? What will we do to be good stewards of our time?   We will explore being aware of God's presence in the moment even as we anticipate Jesus' incarnation. These devotions will seek to help us recognize … [Read more...]

May 12, 2020 by The Presbyterian Outlook Leave a Comment

What's coming to the 2020 General Assembly?  How will you explain the actions of GA to the congregation? The 224th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) meeting in June 2020 is shaping up to be an assembly like no other.  For the first time, GA will be held virtually. This year's assembly will consider critical business and elect a new team of moderators (co-moderators or moderator/vice moderator). We know many congregations are facing unprecedented financial challenges this year.  So, we are offering our balanced, trusted GA bulletin inserts for a special price.  You will receive both the pre-GA and post-GA inserts for the price of one in a full-color, easy to read format that you can easily email to all members of the congregation. Lenten devotions — Year A (2020)

January 10, 2020 by The Presbyterian Outlook Leave a Comment

Are you looking for theologically sound, inspiring and affordable Lenten devotions for the congregation? 5 weeks of Lenten devotions plus bonus prayers for Holy Week — $19.99 Letting go and holding on The liturgical season of Lent invites us to refocus on God as we prayerfully examine our priorities, actions, thoughts and expectations. Often, we give something up for Lent as a way of reminding us daily of Jesus’ sacrifice. We might also take on additional spiritual practices or acts of service so as to follow Jesus more closely. These devotions invite you to both let go and hold on. Each week offers you the opportunity to let go of that which distracts from discerning God’s presence and instead hold on to that which God promises. Week 1 asks us to let go of that which separates us and hold on to communion with God and others, trusting God’s promise to never leave us. Week 2 calls us to set aside empty words and hold on to God’s wisdom, knowing that God promises to give … [Read more...]

    Advent devotions — Year A (2019)

October 2, 2019 by The Presbyterian Outlook Leave a Comment

Purple-church Advent: Devotions for the congregation Are you looking for theologically sound, inspiring and affordable Advent devotions for the congregation? The Presbyterian Outlook is once again offering accessible and inspiring daily devotions for Advent. This year the focus is on the purple of Advent for the church. Buy 4 weeks of Advent devotions and download now: $19.99 About these devotions: In recent years the color purple has been used as a short-hand way to describe a place or institution that is a mix of people with left- and right-leaning politics. The phrase “purple church” denotes caution: Be careful in preaching and teaching, in small group discussions and fellowship hour conversation because we are a “purple church.” Opinions vary and tensions are high, so tread lightly. But what if instead we in the church stopped adopting the language of politics and instead intentionally used the language of our faith? What if, for us, purple equaled preparation, praise, … [Read more...]

Often, congregations have the desire to mark a “holy Lent” but not the tools. You want to pray daily or read the Bible more frequently or try a new spiritual practice, but doing so is a challenge in an already very full life. The Presbyterian Outlook has created theologically sound, accessible and user-friendly Lenten devotions for congregations written by editor Jill Duffield. Each week starts with a brief reflection on a theme followed by a Bible reading, a suggested practice and a prayer for each day of the week. These can be printed in the quantity needed for the congregation and inserted in the weekly worship bulletin for worshippers to take home and use throughout the … [Read more...]
