Description
In a world marked by division, uncertainty and competing narratives, Matthew’s Gospel speaks with striking relevance. Matthew’s first audience — a young, fragile community navigating conflict, identity and fear — sounds a lot like the church today. This Lenten devotional by Outlook editor Teri McDowell Ott invites readers to journey through Matthew’s Gospel to discover how Jesus leads us toward humility, courage, compassion and faithful discipleship amid the fractures of our age.
Grounded in Scripture and written with pastoral warmth, this resource guides individuals and congregations through daily reflections, including a weekly visio divina practice. Each entry includes Scripture, a focus verse, a theologically rich reflection, guided questions, and a closing prayer — making it ideal for personal prayer, small groups, session devotions, or congregational Lenten study.
What this devotional offers
A clear, compelling journey through Matthew
Matthew roots us in a lineage of faith, challenges our assumptions, and invites us to look for God’s surprising work in unexpected places.
Daily reflections that speak to today’s world
Each reading weaves Matthew’s story with our present tensions — cultural upheaval, anxious churches, complicated faith, and the longing to be made new — guiding readers to notice how resurrection hope is already stirring at the edges of ordinary life.
Questions that deepen engagement
Every devotion includes thoughtful reflection questions designed to help readers integrate Scripture into daily life, such as:
- Where do you feel rootless?
- Where might God be inviting you to release an old pattern?
- Who is showing up at the manger today?
A weekly visio divina practice
Visio divina invites readers to slow down, see with the eyes of faith, and encounter God through beauty, color and form. Meditative prompts help guide that practice.
