Ulrich Mauser, seminary professor, funeral July 9

Ulrich W. Mauser, 81, the retired Otto A. Piper Professor of Biblical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, of Trafford, Pa., died July 5.

Funeral services were held July 9 at Level Green Church with its pastor, R. Dennis Macaleer, officiating. A private interment for the family will be in the Union Cemetery, Irwin, Pa.

Dr. Mauser was born October 3, 1926, in Stuttgart, Germany.  He was chaplain at Oregon State University (1959-1964) and taught at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (1964-1977). He was Errett M. Grable Professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Seminary from 1977 to 1990 and Dean of the Seminary from 1981 until his departure in 1990 to teach at Princeton Seminary. He was the author of several books in English and German and served as editor of Horizons in Biblical Theology while at Pittsburgh.    Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Trafford; sons Ulrich, Martin, George, and Thomas Mauser; and five grandchildren.

Reached with the news of Dr. Mauser’s death, William J. Carl III, president of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, issued a statement: “This announcement is personal for me since Dr. Mauser was one of my New Testament professors at Louisville Seminary. I remember distinctly taking exegesis of Matthew from him in the first semester of my junior year in the fall of 1970. I found him to be a terrific teacher, mentor, and friend with a brilliant mind, a gentle smile, a love for sound biblical scholarship, and a heart for the Church. He always had a twinkle in his eye as he opened the Scripture for us and took us deeper than we had ever gone before. … He will definitely be missed by his family, his friends, his former colleagues, and by the world of theological education.”
