Christian communicators highlight climate justice on the road to Copenhagen

(ekklesia) The World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) is calling on religious leaders and communicators to emphasize the need for urgent and radical action on climate change in the run-up to the international Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 6-18, 2009.

Climate change, seriously exacerbated by human activity, is said to be threatening the lives and livelihoods of billions of people and the existence of millions of species.

WACC points out that churches worldwide believe tackling climate change is a matter both of social justice and basic Christian commitment to God’s gift of life.

Action is being taken at local, national, and international levels, but activists point out that the Copenhagen gathering will provide a unique opportunity for major steps forward involving government, corporations, NGOs and citizens.

Operation Noah is among the campaigning groups working with churches and faith communities on raising awareness, encouraging action, and analyzing issues, trends, and responses.

WACC sees its role as spreading the eco-justice message and ensuring it is picked up by the media.

In response to the increasing concern on climate justice, WACC has initiated a new section on its Web site containing resources and articles that it says are “intended to communicate environmental concerns, share knowledge, and advocate action.”

The material can be found at: https://www.waccglobal.org/en/activities/climate-justice.html

WACC, a global ecumenical organization, promotes communication for social change. It promotes the view that “communication is a basic human right that defines people’s common humanity, strengthens cultures, enables participation, creates community, and challenges tyranny and oppression.”
