Lord God, we awake to another city that will now be known as an event, rather than a place. We greet the morning grateful in the knowledge that this very day you are present and sovereign, but we are also dismayed by the actions of a fellow human being. Another city struggles to respond to suffering, death and inexplicable violence. Las Vegas is now added to the ever-growing list of towns and cities, nightclubs and schools, concerts and offices where we count lives lost, people injured and those forever left asking, “Why?”
Prince of Peace, you promise to bless and comfort those who mourn. Draw near to those for whom last night marked the end of life as they once knew it. Support the injured and the grieving, surround them with people who will walk with them today and in the many difficult days ahead. Grant strength to the first responders who enter into the carnage and pain to bring relief. Make all of us tireless advocates for systems that help prevent tragedies, care for the vulnerable and uphold the weak.
Holy Spirit, Advocate and Comforter, be unmistakably present in Las Vegas as You bring healing, hope, strength and community. May the light of Christ shine brighter than the neon strip even during this dark season. May the water of life flow through the parched places in the desert and throughout our nation. May the love of God have the resounding, last, life-giving word and may we amplify it in our words and in our lives. Amen.
