Prayer for the 224th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

God of all creation, we come to you asking for your guidance and Spirit as we convene the 224th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A). We trust your ability to work through our human limitations and bring good out of our partial attempts at faithfulness.

As we gather across the country in our homes, in front of screens, we pray that we would feel a deep sense of connection to you and to one another. Grant us wisdom and discernment so that the critical and core business of the church will reflect your life-giving grace and mercy.

When the internet connection fails or the screen freezes or we cannot hear the speaker, remind us to be patient and kind. When we recognize that we are not doing enough to address inequity and injustice, embolden us with courage. When we wonder what difference our discipleship makes, speak again your parables of seeds and leaven. When we struggle with the state of the world, strengthen our resolve and send us out to be the hands and feet of Christ. When we wrestle with the ramifications of a pandemic, the overflowing frustrations of centuries-long racism and entertain doubts that real change is impossible, obliterate our fears and complacencies with the reality of Jesus’ resurrection power.

Through the Advocate who gives us the words to speak, make our work in cyberspace reverberate through creation in ways that reflect our love for you and our neighbors. In Christ’s name we pray, amen.
