Description
The whistle blows, the buzzer sounds. At the end of any sporting event or game, it is still just a game. But in the U.S., “the game” – whatever the sport – often takes players and fans to a level of passion that, to some, can be difficult to navigate. To others, however, the community of sports is a space of camaraderie and joy. In his book The Uses of Idolatry, William Cavanaugh suggests that religious devotion has not disappeared, but rather migrated into other spheres of modern life. Is sports – a multi-billion-dollar industry that’s rife with unfair pay and wear-and-tear on bodies – a part of that sphere?
In this issue of the Outlook, we explore the community that sports built.
