Dimmock graduated from Davidson College with a B.S. in English (1943) and earned an M.Div. (1946) and Th.M. (1950) from Union Seminary in Virginia. He earned an Ed.D. from North Carolina State University in 1978.
He directed the Division of Evangelism of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.) from 1954 to 1963, and served churches in Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.
At the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va., he served as the founding director of the Center on Aging from 1978 to 1985.
He helped to develop the Center for Creative Retirement at UNC-Asheville, a continuing education center for older adults, and served on the Land of Sky Regional Council on Aging.
Dimmock was a member of Western North Carolina Presbytery and part of the Black Mountain church community.
He served on the Board of Trustees of the Mountain Retreat Association from 1998 to the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife, Henrietta “Chick” McMullen Dimmock; his brother, Thomas Herbert Dimmock Jr. and wife, Edna; four children, Martha Campbell and husband, Gill, of Mobile, Ala., Tom Dimmock and wife, Boyd, of Raleigh, Frank Dimmock and wife, Nancy, of Lilongwe, Malawi, in Southern Africa, and Ellen Begley and husband, Mike, of Black Mountain; and 14 grandchildren.
