Ben Sparks: Mentor, challenging editorialist

I have read The Presbyterian Outlook since I was a student at Union Theological Seminary, and have continually been grateful for its usefulness. But I must say that when Ben Sparks was announced as its interim editor in February of 2004, the Outlook became much more fun to read.

I have read The Presbyterian Outlook since I was a student at Union Theological Seminary, and have continually been grateful for its usefulness. But I must say that when Ben Sparks was announced as its interim editor in February of 2004, the Outlook became much more fun to read.

Never one to hesitate about expressing an opinion in his editorials, Ben has consistently challenged the church to be true to its calling. More often than not, I have found myself nodding in agreement with what Ben has written–though not always. But whether I have agreed or nor, his comments have always, always made me think, whether about the nature of the gospel, or about the purpose of the church’s ministry.  Ben is a wise and loving critic, whose commitment to the church has shone through in the thoughtfulness with which he has guided the Outlook through these last months. He has modeled for us what it means to serve God, the church, and the world with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love.

It has recently been my pleasure to work with Ben in my service as the book review editor of the Outlook. During my brief tenure, he has been encouraging and supportive, and has made very clear his commitment to the importance of reading in the life of the church. I’ll miss his good guidance in that regard, but I give thanks to God that the church we love and serve will continue to be blessed by his many gifts.

In the meantime, I look forward to serving with Jack Haberer in his new role as editor, and trust that his leadership will strengthen not only the Outlook, but also the church.

Randy Harris is pastor of Pickens Church in Pickens, S. C. and he has been Outlook book review editor since March 2005.
