Born May 12, 1929, in Laurinburg, N.C., Evans graduated from Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary (now Union-PSCE.) He also studied at Yale University and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Ordained by Charleston (S.C.) Presbytery in 1954, Evans served as college chaplain at The Citadel for two years and later as a professor at Davidson for three years. He also served pastorates in Charleston and Auburn, Ala.
From 1964-1973 he served on the national staff of the former Presbyterian Church in the United States, first as secretary of the Division of Higher Education and later as executive secretary of the Board of Christian Education.
Evans then served as executive presbyter for New Harmony Presbytery, where he was instrumental in developing the “New Harmony Model” for supporting theological education that today exists as The Theological Education Fund (TEF), in which participating congregations contribute 1 percent of their mission budget to the PC(USA)’s seminaries.
Evans retired in 1994 but continued his service to the church, serving two terms on the General Assembly Council and serving as a consultant to the TEF and numerous congregations and presbyteries.
