Phil Tom accepts government position

Phil Tom, who has been the associate for small church and community ministry for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), is taking a position with President Barack Obama’s administration in Washington,  D.C.

Tom has been named director of the Center for Faith-based and Community Initiatives in the Department of Labor. That center is one of several that former President George W. Bush created by executive order in 2001 in federal departments including Labor, along with Health and Human Services, Education, and Urban Development. They are designed to help grassroots groups better access federal grants and other services. Tom will work, for example, on issues such as livable wages, working conditions and labor rights.

He previously worked as a parish pastor, including at Immanuel Church in Indianapolis, Ind., and as the denomination’s associate for urban ministry in the mid-1990s.
