“Martha carried a huge load, managing most editorial functions that first year,” under the oversight of volunteer interim editor Ben Sparks, said Jack Haberer, the Outlook’s current editor. Sparks was pastor of Second Church, Richmond, at the time, so he could give just a few hours a week to lead the Outlook. Skelton previously served as editor for the Southern Baptist Mission Board.
“Martha has also been my mentor and coach,” Haberer added. He joined the Outlook staff a year after she did, but as a pastor of two decades, he brought no journalism experience.
As February began, the Outlook added Michael Jennings to its staff. He is serving as copy editor, a half-time position. A nationwide search for Skelton’s successor led to the husband of the Outlook’s national reporter, Leslie Scanlon. They both live in Louisville, Ky.
