Justice consultation features visit to tomato pickers

FT. MYERS, FLA. (WCRC, CRC) The World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) held its first ever justice consultation in early April, hopeful that it had advanced its mission to seek fair treatment for workers and others who are marginalized in the world.

The commissioners also affirmed that the ecumenical organization has committed itself “to the full scope of gender justice, celebrating all that women contribute to the church in our theology and practice.”

A visit to a group of Florida tomato pickers struggling to obtain a fair wage for their labor began the consultation as an experience in which WCRC representatives could see first-hand the kind of issues that poor and often ignored migrant workers must face, along with how, through their faith and hard negotiation, they are addressing those challenges.

“This has been a good opportunity to share, and I hope that it will be a source of inspiration for people,” said Robina Winbush, ecumenical officer of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which hosted the event.
