PCA may quit NAE

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America has directed its Interchurch Relations Committee to study the denomination’s participation in the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) and offer its findings to the 2012 General Assembly.

The assembly felt it would be prudent to study the matter, research “the soundest grounds for retaining or retiring from an ecumenical partnership” and take time to consider withdrawing from a partnership the denomination has engaged in since 1986.

An overture from Central Carolina Presbytery recommended withdrawing from the NAE “at the soonest possible date.” According to the overture, the NAE “has intermeddled in public affairs” by endorsing the idea of climate change and supporting the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, among other endorsements.

Additionally, the overture states that PCA’s credibility as a denomination and statement of faith as set forth in the Westminster Confession of Faith provide little reason to associate with the NAE.
