First Candidate for Moderator of the 2012 General Assembly

The first candidate for moderator of the 2012 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has been announced. The Presbytery of Elizabeth has endorsed Neal D. Presa, a teaching elder and the pastor of Middlesex Presbyterian church in New Jersey since 2003.

            A Filipino American, Presa has experience both at the regional and national levels of the denomination and in international ecumenical work. He is chair of the General Assembly Special Committee on the Heidelberg Catechism and has been active in the World Communion of Reformed Churches,  previously serving on its executive committee and since 2006 as convener of its Caribbean and North American Area Council.

            Presa also previously served as vice-chair of what was then the General Assembly Council and is currently moderator of the Presbytery of Elizabeth. He has a doctorate in liturgical studies and liturgical theology from Drew University and earned a master of divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a master of theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. He teaches as an adjunct at Somerset Christian College and at New Brunswick Theological Seminary.

            He is married and the father of two sons.
