Feasting on the Gospels: Luke, Volumes 1 and 2 (bookmark)

Feasting on Gospelsedited by Cynthia Jarvis and L. Elizabeth Johnson

The hits just keep coming. The wise person who dreamed the “Feasting on the Word” idea and all its spinoffs should be given a medal for visionary thinking. Seriously, this is a rich resource for preachers and teachers — indeed, for all who want to study Scripture, passage by passage. Written in the style of the “Feasting on the Word Commentary” series, this two-part volume on Luke explores all the passages in the Gospel, not only those in the common lectionary. Four writers of considerable skill address each passage from one of four angles: theology, exegesis, pastoral care and homiletics. Think of this as the written form of a highly engaged Bible study group with multiple voices lifting up thoughtful comments that will stir up one’s imagination and lead to richer biblical sermons.

Why limit the series to preachers? One might choose to study Luke’s Gospel using this as a daily guide. A small group studying the Gospel will find plenty for conversation in this guide. It’s well known that biblical knowledge is fading among Christians. This commentary and its companion volumes provide a remedy and a beautiful one.
