First Presbyterian Church — Austin, Texas
First Presbyterian Church hosts a little-known treasure: It charters Boy Scout Troop 1, which was organized in March 1911 — just one year after Scouting began in 1910. Although small, it contributed $2075 to Friends of Scouting — the highest percentage of giving in its district.
Troop 1 encouraged and supported me throughout my rigorous combined Eagle Scout and William T. Hornaday Conservation Award projects. (The Hornaday Award is Scouting’s highest conservation award.) With Troop 1’s help, I constructed and installed six wood duck boxes at Austin’s Camp Mabry. My Eagle/Hornaday project should increase the population of wood ducks at Camp Mabry that annually migrate north from Mexico through Austin to Canada. The project created an educational area where visitors can witness nesting wood ducks. The project demanded over 160 hours from a crew of eight Scouts and 10 adult volunteers.
— Morgan David Jones, 15-year-old Presbyterian Eagle Scout
