Is there room for mysticism in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)? by Lydia Griffiths

Questions:

  1. What are some times when and where you have had a profound experience of the presence of God? To what extent were these mystical experiences?
  2. What do you see as similar or different between the concepts “union with Christ” and “being in the presence of God”?
  3. The author refers often to John Calvin’s ministry and writings. What are some insights and/or questions that arise for you regarding Calvin’s understanding of mysticism and its place in the Christian’s experience of or relationship with God?
  4. After reading the article, how would you answer the question posed in the title of the article?

Reflections at an ordination by Ronald P. Byars

Questions:

  1. Byars writes, “There is no sure-fire recipe guaranteed to produce faith. And faith is not achieved by effort.” What do you think are some of the factors that contribute to the faith formation of followers of Jesus?
  2. What insights did you gain or what questions arose from what the author writes about the role of the pastor in today’s Presbyterian churches?
  3. Three times the author quotes John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.” Why do you think the author chose to feature this verse? Read the verse in the context of John 10:22-30. What does this passage teach us about Jesus and those who follow him?
  4. In what ways do you see the Holy Spirit at work in the ministry of the church’s members and of the pastor?
