The Rev. Roger Harp, pastor at First Church, Grand Island, Neb., and former Synod Executive/Stated Clerk/Treasurer of the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic died tragically Sunday afternoon in a traffic accident on Interstate 80 while on his way to pick up his wife in Lincoln, Nebraska. His vehicle apparently crossed the median on the interstate and struck a westbound tractor trailer.
Roger served as Synod Executive/State Clerk/Treasurer at the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic (the Middle Governing Body of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A) from August, 2003 until December of 2006 when he began to feel led to “seek to conclude my ministry in a parish setting, if possible.”
Roger accepted the call to First Presbyterian Church, Grand Island, NE in January. He was anxious to begin his ministry there and was excited that he and Carolyn would be closer to their family. Carolyn was in Lincoln, NE visiting family and celebrating the birth of a new granddaughter at the time of the accident.
During their time in Richmond, Carolyn work at the Cokesbury bookstore on the campus of Union-PSCE. The Harps were also active at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church.
Services for Roger will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island, NE on Friday, February 23 @ 2:00 p.m. The Reverend Bill Nottage-Tacey, pastor at First Hastings will conduct the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial contributions be sent to First Church, 2013 West Anna Street, Grand Island, NE 68803. The family will decide at a later date which Presbyterian Mission project(s) to designate the funds.
