A funeral service was held March 7 at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Harvey’s home city for many years. According to a church spokes-person, Harvey and his late wife, Lynne, were adherents of the church. They were not members in the formal sense, but attended services and participated some in church programs. The funeral services for Mrs. Harvey were held at the church in May 2008.
Paul Harvey was born in Tulsa, Okla., on September 4, 1918, and began working in radio as a high school student in 1933. Through his high school and college years at the University of Tulsa, Harvey worked his way up from sweeping floors to broadcast announcing, news reporting, to program director.
After radio work in Kansas and Hawaii, Harvey went to Chicago in 1944. He was soon the most popular newscaster in Chicago. Along the way, Harvey honed his distinctive news reading style and special features, such as “The Rest of the Story.”
In recent years, Harvey broadcast on a reduced schedule with “fill-in hosts” broadcasting on his programs.
Paul Harvey received many awards over his career, including election to the National Association of Broadcasters Radio Hall of Fame, 11 Freedom Foundation Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lynne Harvey, and a sister, Frances Price. Survivors include his son, Paul Harvey Jr. and daughter-in-law, Dina; nieces and nephews.
