The 30-member congregation is meeting in an elementary school across the street for a few weeks with the hope that they can put up temporary structures on their property until the sanctuary can be rebuilt. The church’s session will meet April 18 to discuss future plans. It is a member of New Covenant Presbytery.
Servant-Savior is known for its diversity, inclusiveness, and service to its community. Groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, a Centering Prayer Group, and the church’s Servant Leadership School all regularly met in the church building, according to Brehm, who is a part-time pastor to two congregations – Servant-Savior and First Presbyterian Church in Dickinson, Texas,
The congregation has a lot going on, in spite of its modest size. “We are not a small church but a big family,” says its Web site. “This was a huge loss to us. It is like a home,” says the pastor. They know they face a tremendous task in rebuilding. “This is a very vibrant group. It will emerge from this even more vibrant,” he adds.
Members have received encouraging messages from all over the country, says Brehm. He is collecting such letters into a book he plans to read from in the worship services to come while they are working through the rebuilding process. It will remind them that Presbyterian brothers and sisters are praying for them and supporting them, he says. Letters can be sent to the church at 11303 Hughes Road, Houston, TX 77089.
