Richmond: International Conference on Religious Freedom

The International Consortium for Law and Religion Studies (ICLARS) will hold its third bi-annual conference—Religion, Democracy, and Equality—August 21-23, 2013 in Virginia. The conference features presentations by more than 80 international experts from more than 20 countries. The keynote address will be given by Heiner Bielefeldt, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief.  Sessions of the conference will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Richmond Downtown Hotel, at the University of Virginia School of Law, and at the College of William & Mary.

The International Consortium for Law and Religion Studies (ICLARS) is an international network of scholars and experts of law and religion begun in 2007 with Professor Silvio Ferrari of the University of Milan as President. The purpose of ICLARS is to provide a forum for exchange of information, data, and opinions among members, which are then made available to the broader scientific community. Currently, ICLARS has members from more than 40 countries.  The ICLARS steering committee members are eminent law and religion scholars from Italy, Spain, India, Argentina, Germany, Israel, and South Africa.

The International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS) of the J. Reuben Clark Law School, Brigham Young University, is pleased to play a supportive role in the organization and sponsoring of the conference, under the direction of ICLARS President and ICLRS Director, W. Cole Durham, Jr. Other co-sponsors of the conference include the University of Virginia School of Law, the William & Mary Bill of Rights Law Institute, and the First Freedom Center.
