Richmond Third church celebrates renovation in wake of sanctuary ceiling failing last year

The congregation of Richmond (Va.) Third church celebrated on Oct. 14 the remodeling of their sanctuary, just a little emore than a year since the sanctuary ceiling fell.

Mark Holt, chair of the church’s communications committee, reports that the sanctuary was “packed” for the service, which also celebrated the addition of a new pipe organ.

“We are grateful to God for protecting us from harm, and blessing the church with an even better house of worship,” said Holt. “Pastor Steve Hartman’s message, the choir’s music and the organ’s great sound were a magnificent celebration of faith in Jesus Christ.”

The ceiling fell Sept. 20, 2000 while hundreds of the 1,000-member congregation were involved in Wednesday night programs elsewhere on the church’s campus. None were in the sanctuary when the ceiling fell, burying the most of the pews, pulpit and organ under tons of plaster and other debris.

The sanctuary was built in 1967.
