Jerusalem Road (cover poem)

A journey as long as the way

from Eden to Babel and back,

as painful as Abraham’s

knifebearing sojourn with Isaac,

as daring as David’s cool scramble

for stones in the brook,

as grim in its ending as train tracks

that grind into Auschwitz,

as secret with hope as a son

heading home from the war,

as full of the past and the future

as breakers that thunder to shore.
