He came a most unlikely guest
on night when air was cool and still
and people sought to hide from dark
amidst the shelter of an inn.
To Bethlehem, most came in herds
and they were but just some of those
who sojourned there by foot and ass
to pay their dues and then return.
The air, its stillness then did churn
by wings of angels singing mass
proclaiming to whom God had chose
the beauty of His gracious words.
“Peace on the earth, good will to men”
the song rose up as if to arc
from heaven’s heights to man’s dark will
a word by which we all are blest.
