His star is Zack, Seth Rogen, who excels at playing the likable and goofy, so even explicit body part humor is well, funny. His co-star is Elizabeth Banks, who also recently played the elegant Laura Bush in “W”…….ah, the wonders of Hollywood casting.
Zack and Miri have enjoyed this platonic relationship as roommates for several years, just sort of barely getting by on menial jobs, when suddenly the bills pile up and their electricity is turned off, and they are desperate to do something. Out of honorable ideas, they decide to make a porno movie together. They recruit from the local strip club, they film in the coffee shop where Zack works, they encounter all kinds of production problems, but in the end, the real point is that the two characters, thinking they could easily “do the deed” without it mattering to either one of them, suddenly discover that they have feelings for each other. So really what we have here is a romantic comedy with a raunchy context, and there’s been plenty of that around lately, because it seems to be extremely popular with the young, urban, “with-it” group, at least those who aren’t really concerned about the morality issues, just if it’s entertaining.
Well, this reviewer will admit to finding some parts hilarious, some poignant, some offensive, and some just puzzling. The film is not really erotic. And not very pornographic, either. It certainly isn’t for everyone. But for those who enjoy racy humor, uniquely presented, it’s a really unusual offering.
