Five grads share Outlook college partnership award

Kristen Riegel, from Batavia, N.Y., is the 2010 recipient of The Presbyterian Outlook Church-College Partnership Award. Judges selected her essay on the assigned topic, “How my education at a PC(USA)-related college has shaped my faith and prepared me for significant service and leadership” as this year’s best entry.

Four recipients shared the second place award: Sarah Bellacicco, Jonathan Fox, Cheryl Guenther, and Hannah Lyon. Judges found their essays of equal, high quality.

This past May, Riegel was awarded a B.A. in humanities, media, and cultural studies from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. She maintained a 3.74 GPA. This fall she will enter the Master of Divinity program at McCormick Theological Seminary to pursue a call to pastoral ministry.

Sarah Bellacicco, from Mt. Pleasant, S.C., earned dual B.A. degrees in Christian education and German, with a history minor, from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., maintaining a 3.99 GPA. She will be working this next year in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s Young Adult Volunteer Program on assignment in Atlanta at the Central Church’s Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Center. She then intends to pursue dual graduate degrees in law and social work.

Jonathan Fox, from Colorado Springs, Colo., earned a B.A. in English from Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. His plans have not been formulated as of press time, but he told the Outlook, “I will be spending a lot of time reading, writing stories, and playing music wherever I end up.”

Cheryl Guenther, of Memphis, Tenn., earned a B.A. in religion and social justice, with a Spanish minor from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., maintaining a 3.81 GPA. This fall she will serve as community coordinator for the Cal Aggie Christian Association, an ecumenical campus ministry at U.C. Davis supported by the PC(USA), United Methodist Church, and United Church of Christ.

Hannah Lyon, from West End, N.C., earned a B.A. in religious studies at Davidson College, in Davidson, N.C. This summer she is interning at Swarthmore Church in Swarthmore, Pa. This fall she will take several classes at Columbia Theological Seminary, and then, in January 2011, she will move to South Africa to pursue Master of Divinity studies at Stellenbosch University.

The five winning essays, as selected by a panel of Presbyterians leaders, will be published this fall in the 2011 Outlook Guide to PC(USA)-Related Colleges and Universities. The Presbyterian Outlook Foundation presented Riegel with the first place award of $1,000; second place winners received $200 each.
