TV minister inspires switch from pop musician to pastor

A minister’s televised call to Christ inspired the last steps of Ron Lee’s long journey from the pop music industry in his native Hawaii to the pastorate of a small Presbyterian church in North Carolina.

As a teenager, Lee mastered stringed and percussion instruments well enough to perform with name groups like Jan and Dean. He won a scholarship to San Francisco Conservatory, played in a house band at Lake Tahoe, performed on cruise ships and landed a five-year gig as drummer for the Hawaiian pop musician Don Ho.

His wife’s family ties drew them to Charlotte, N.C., where in 2002 a minister on the Inspiration Network changed Lee’s life.

“I felt as if God draped a warm blanket around me,” Lee told a reporter for the Salisbury, N.C., Post.

At age 55, Lee enrolled at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte. He graduated in 2009 and served as a pulpit supply minister before accepting a call at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in China Grove. In February 2011, he was ordained.
