Thinking theologically about technology: seminary launches New Media Web site

NEW YORK – With funding from the Lilly Endowment, Union Theological Seminary in New York has launched a “New Media” Web site that explores how pastors and lay leaders can employ new technologies to strengthen their communities.

The site is intended to go beyond the technical know-how needed to build Web sites and use social media by providing broader, theologically grounded reflection on the lasting effects these technologies can have.

The “New Media” Web site and blog will feature the work of:
• Jason Byassee, a research fellow in theology and leadership at Leadership Education
at Duke Divinity;
• Monica A. Coleman, is associate professor of Constructive Theology and African
American Religions at Claremont School of Theology;
• Lerone A. Martin, is assistant professor of American Religious History and Culture at
Eden Theological Seminary;
• Kathryn Reklis, executive director of the Institute for Art, Religion, and Social Justice
at Union and the outgoing Director of Theological Initiatives there;
• Jim Rice, editor of Sojourners magazine; and
• Verity A. Jones, project director and the former publisher and editor of
DisciplesWorld magazine.

As the project unfolds, six case studies and research about new media will be posted on the site to encourage generative theological dialogue.

You can follow the project on Facebook and Twitter, or sign up for the e-newsletter on the bottom right column of the Web site to receive biweekly updates.
