Union-Charlotte unveils new campus plans

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Charlotte’s Presbyterian seminary has broken ground on a campus in the heart of the SouthPark area — a $6.5 million development that will give the school its first permanent home.

When Union Presbyterian Seminary opens its 22,000-square-foot building by summer 2012, the seminary will be able to increase enrollment as well as the number of offerings to pastors, Christian educators and the general community.

Union-Charlotte, an extension of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) seminary in Richmond, Va., began holding classes in 2002 on the campus of Queens University. With Queens needing the space for plans for an expanded student body and programs, Union arranged with Sharon Presbyterian Church to lease approximately three acres on its wooded campus on Sharon Road. The 50-year lease is for $1 a year, with the possibility of two 10-year extensions.
