Kelly Allen endorsed as third candidate to stand for moderator

Kelly AllenA third candidate has emerged for moderator of the 2014 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) – the first woman nominated so far to stand for this election, which will take place in Detroit in June.

On Feb. 28, Mission Presbytery nominated Kelly Allen, pastor of University Presbyterian Church in  San Antonio, Texas. Allen, a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary, has served at University church since 2009, and previously served congregations in Buckinghamshire, England; St. Louis; and Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

She has also been active at the presbytery and national levels of the PC(USA): currently chairing the immigration task force of Mission Presbytery and serving on the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance national response team from 2000 to 2007. In her blog, Allen spells out some of her views on evolution, social justice and more. She and her husband, John Rezentes, have two children.

Two other candidates have also been nominated so far: ruling elder Heath Rada from North Carolina, and teaching elder John Wilkinson from New York state.
