… I don’t believe her

This one is personal. When I was a young mother with my first child, I took her along to a circle meeting at church. They didn’t have a nursery, so I held her and hoped for the best. I got the worst. She got restless so I gave her my car keys to play with. She banged them and hollered. Miss Coon, a woman in her 80s, said, “I once knew a woman with six little boys and they all behaved and were quiet.” She made me feel terrible. But now I’m in my 80s and as I look back, I don’t believe her.
