I’ve always thought of my church as an extended family. And families — however loving and well intentioned they are — take work! I grew up working alongside those church family members and doing whatever was needed. When I first came to Union Presbyterian Church in 2001, that attitude was firmly ingrained.
Last year, I laughed in response to the New Beginnings assessment question, “What gifts do you have that aren’t being used in this church?” It struck me that there are no gifts I possess that are not being tapped or further honed in service to my church. And realizing that made me feel thankful, not burdened.
When family calls, you answer. You answer because they love you, you love them and you all share a desire to do the best you can in service to others. At Union, we believe that that’s also how we love God and honor God’s abiding love for us.
