Meet Outlook board member John Arwood

John Arwood is a lifelong Presbyterian, raised in Arkansas and ordained as an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has held various editing roles at newspapers in Arkansas, Missouri and North Carolina, including nearly 25 years at The Charlotte Observer, where he helped lead the newsroom’s transition to a digital-first strategy. He now works in the corporate communications field in Charlotte.

His wife, Alice, grew up at Covenant and they met and married at the church in 1998. Among other activities, John and Alice have both been involved in the education ministry at Covenant, from teaching elementary-age children to serving on the adult education committee to helping bring nationally recognized speakers to Charlotte. One of John’s favorite spiritual disciplines is reading the same Scripture passage every day for a certain period of time. One year during Lent, he read Philippians 4:8 (“Whatever is true …”) for each of the 40 days and found the experience transformative. He and Alice live just south of the state line in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where Alice is a classroom assistant in the Rock Hill School District. John and Alice enjoy hiking, cooking together, browsing in used bookstores and watching their twin 16-year-old daughters participate in everything from dance competitions to choir and orchestra concerts to the 800-meter dash.

On the Outlook board, John serves on the governance and strategy committee. From his first meeting, John’s ability to listen to long discussions and respond by communicating a clear, compelling and concise message has been invaluable. He also brings to the board extensive knowledge of publishing, journalism and navigating the complex world of digital communications. John’s skills are matched only by the gracious spirit with which he shares them. We are grateful for his service!

The Presbyterian Outlook Foundation is governed by a board of 15 directors. The Presbyterian Outlook is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3), funded through subscription sales, ad sales and donations.
