CHICAGO — The Presbyterian Outlook received top honors in several categories at the Associated Church Press (ACP) 2018 annual conference in Chicago in April. The ACP awards recognize excellence in faith-based media — including magazines, news services, websites and podcasts.
The Presbyterian Outlook was commended at the ACP “Best of the Christian Press Awards,” receiving:
- Award of excellence for magazine redesign.
- Award of excellence for a blog series: Parental grief series, sharing stories of parental loss in anticipation of the Advent season.
- Award of excellence for writing/personal experience: “Pastoring a purple church” by Christopher Edmonston.
- Best in class blog: Outlook Outpost blog, featuring voices of younger Presbyterian leaders.
Of the blog series on parental grief, the ACP judge noted: “Powerful writing and reflection on a topic that receives too little attention in the church and in broader society. Very sensitive treatment of how infertility or losing a child is addressed as an issue affecting people of faith and the communities to which they belong. Timely link with Advent and the anticipation of the Christ child, for those who are without child.”
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) media did well at this year’s awards. The Presbyterian News Service, General Assembly News Service, Presbyterians Today (the magazine published by the denomination in Louisville) and Presbyterian Women in the PC(USA) also received awards.
The ACP is a professional organization of member publications (of which the Outlook is one) “with a commitment to excellence in journalism as a means to describe, reflect and support the life of faith and the Christian community,” according to its mission statement.
