Renowned theologian, ecumenist Lew Mudge dies

Lewis S. Mudge, a scholar and theologian whose breadth of interests and expertise enriched virtually every corner of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the global ecumenical movement, died in his sleep Sept. 11 at his home in Berkeley, Calif. He would have turned 80 on Oct. 22.

Beyond the player piano

When I was on study leave last March, I spent much of my study time in the lobby of the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Ky. Sitting at a desk in an alcove of this elegant lobby, I spent hours each day reading, reflecting, and writing.

A death in the family

Recently, an 86-year-old man, overwhelmed by caring for his Alzheimer’s- stricken wife, took his gun, shot her to death then went to the attic of their home, lay down in the crawlspace, and killed himself. This man and his wife were members of our church.

GENEVA (ENI) — Three women who serve as presidents of the World Council of Churches (WCC) have expressed "considerable concern and great disappointment" about the lack of women in senior staff leadership positions in the world's biggest church grouping.
