Over 35 years ago, Mark led his first confirmation class of 25 eighth graders — over 88 percent of the youth stopped participating in church shortly after their confirmation.
Since that experience, Mark has wondered, “What is wrong with confirmation and how do we fix it?” Conversations with colleagues confirmed that more church leaders are asking these same questions.
As editor and primary writer of the PC(USA)’s Big God Big Questions and, most recently, Changing the World: Confirmation for the Missional Church, Mark has a hunch that shifting the focus of confirmation from institutional membership to inspiring young people to take on their missional identities is a step in the right direction.

Mark D. Hinds, Ed.D., is a retired writer, editor and publisher for Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) curriculum development. He has degrees from Trinity University, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (now Union Presbyterian Seminary). His 1994 dissertation was titled The Book of Proverbs: Toward Alternative Pedagogical Principles for Confirmation in the PC(USA). He was the primary writer and project leader for the Big God Big Questions confirmation curriculum. In retirement, he enjoys writing for the church. Mark lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with his partner and spouse, Rev. Dr. Peggy C. Hinds.
