T. Donald Black, who served as executive director of the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in the 1980s, died Feb. 16 in Jenkintown, Pa. He was 93.
A native of Mercer, Pa., Black was ordained by the United Presbyterian Church of North America in 1945, received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Grove City College in 1955 and held pastorates in Oklahoma City, Philadelphia and London, England. He helped establish the Association of Community Churches in Europe and the Middle East.
A dedicated ecumenist, Black served as the first president of the Oklahoma State Council of Churches and was a delegate to the founding assembly of the National Council of Churches.
The PC(USA) and the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. merged in 1983, and Black became the General Assembly Council’s first post-merger executive secretary. He retired in 1988.
His wife, Frances Greenan Black, died in 2008.
