Missionaries in Philippines are returning home (70 years ago)

70 years ago — March 19, 1945

Among the 134 missionaries freed from Japanese internment camps in the Philippine Islands were 34 Presbyterians. Mrs. Jack Vinson wrote that when the release papers from the Japanese were read, “We gathered in the lobby to cry and sing the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’ That night the Americans actually stepped inside our walls — 24 hours after we had seen American tanks out in the street. We’ve certainly had our table loaded down in the presence of our enemies. … Our only troubles have been due to poor food. … Compared to most other prisoners we haven’t anything to complain of at all. … Our earthly possessions are practically nil. … ” William Junkins writes, “‘We have faced some serious annoyances, deprivations and some real suffering — enough to make us realize very soberly that we are very fortunate to have come through with our health. … A commentary on the providence of God and the power of prayer. …May God grant that this war will end soon and that we can quickly get back to China.’”
