In the light of the promise – 30 years ago

Maybe in the heart of the disciples there was “a feeling of relief when Jesus was crucified? Did not that awful event confirm what they really believed in their hearts: the way it was before they met him was, in fact, the way it really was. Hate is stronger than love. Darkness is more powerful than light. Evil is everywhere. Life will crush you. No one can be trusted.” The “invitation to live a faithful and loving life in a dark and hostile world was no longer binding … . Maybe the resurrection is … bad news before it is good news.” If God’s promises “can lay more claim upon our lives than do the painful experiences of life, then we must offer our fainting, doubting hearts to God and pray for the gift of faith. … Left to our own reason and our own efforts, we would be swept away by the forces of darkness. We know that faith cannot be sustained by our grit and determination, but must be daily resurrected by the power and grace of God.”
