Stated Clerk James E. Andrews (20 years ago)

20 years ago — July 10, 1995

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Evans v. Romer. “The brief opposes constitutional amendments to the State of Colorado, which would allow discrimination against homosexual persons. [Stated Clerk James E.] Andrews based his actions on longstanding General Assembly policy, dating back to 1977. Both predecessor denominations had policies supporting just treatment of homosexual persons with respect to civil liberties, equal rights and legal protection from social and economic discrimination. The 205th General Assembly (1993) reaffirmed the policy, condemning ‘all discriminatory legislation, such as is exemplified by Article 2, section 30 (Amendment 2) of the Colorado constitution.’ That General Assembly instructed the stated clerk to ‘communicate with state and local officials informing them of the official Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) policy.’”

From a news brief contributed by Joanne Green and Kay Moore, “Stated Clerk James E. Andrews.”
