The system works (50 years ago)

50 years ago — June 20, 1966

In the first business session, commissioners had been given a reminder of the importance of their order … [which used the words of the moderator’s father]: “The Presbyterian system is a wonderful system. When it fails it does so because we don’t have faithful presbyters.”

When the Confession of 1967 had cleared the final hurdle and was shown to have practical unanimous support, a reporter inquired of the stated clerk as to why this was true when strong opposition had been expressed in some quarters last year. “The agreement that has been reached,” he said, “shows that our amending process is a good one.” … Since all that can be done to the C-67 in the presbyteries is to vote for it or against it, the possibility of widespread debate about its contents would seem slight. Still, with all the attendant discussion thus far, the amended form should be a source of continuing interest and study at all levels. This, with the other confessions, offers a new challenge to individuals and groups to understand its meaning and probe the implications.
